Every Monday morning I have a long lie in cos its my day off. Often the weekend has been fairly frantic – leading worship, speaking at churches, meetings…and this weekend was exactly that. And so this morning I woke up pretty late…but felt totally shattered and drained despite my sleep. How would I have enough energy for the week ahead? Work, football coaching, a weekend in Mayo, school visits in Enniskillen…

“Do you not know?  Have you not heard?  The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.  He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40: 28-31

I find so much hope in these verses… And every Monday I stop. Pause. Reflect. Rest. Sabbath.

Sometimes it means sleeping for a while. Often it’s catching up with a friend. Spending time in my Bible. Listening to worship music. Playing football. Eating a meal with Sarah. Taking a walk. Today has been all those things. And it’s been beautiful. I feel refreshed. I thank God for Mondays. I thank Him for Sabbath!

Sabbath.A day to cease from work and labour.
A day to be refreshed.
A day to release my grip.
A day not to worry.
A day to pause and remember who really is control.
