tolerance, riots and the joys of football March 29, 2009

riot

yesterday was such a rollercoaster day and i’m going to try to sum it up in a blog post while remaining acutely aware that it won’t do it even the smallest fraction of justice.

northern ireland v poland was always going to be a controversial fixture. we all have heard the stories of polish migrant workers not being welcomed into communities here in our country, and of some local companies choosing migrant workers over local people. this post is not about that but it should set the scene. add to this a footballing rivalry and a general intolerance towards each other from both sides and you’ll get the picture.

the morning was brilliant. our wee supporters club, Lough Shore NISC, picked up the trophy at a local supporters charity tournament at Olympia Leisure. one of our prizes is to possibly parade on the Windsor Park pitch on Wednesday night. more on that in the future. i’m very excited!!

in the afternoon we popped along to see a mate play in a fans match being organised between the 2 sets of fans. in fact, it was more than that. it was a full on fun day put on for the polish community by the northern ireland fans association. a brilliant gesture and a feel good factor in the air. this was not picked up much by the media yesterday sadly as they chose to focus on bad news instead.

as we reached belfast city centre, we began to see and hear reports small scuffles of violence. not totally unfamiliar to international football, but something which we had seen completely divorced from northern ireland home games in the past decade.

now i’m in no means racist or xenophobic…and i happily welcome the poles to our country…however, in this occasion from what i witnessed first hand yesterday, it seemed to be completely started and provoked by people from the polish community before the match on tate’s avenue.

i do not call them fans, because when we got into the ground, we could see that the away support was totally full. so instead it seems to have come from a few hundred mindless thugs who saw fit to cause trouble and begin running battles with the police, innocent bystanders, and a small minority of northern ireland fans who chose to retaliate, or at very worst get involved. the gangs that were congregating outside the ground were very sinister and we watched from afar as they launched anything they could get their hands on as missiles.

so sad.

and yet i was proud of the way our fans didn’t fight back on mass and mostly stayed clear of violence. for me, we still remain the best set of supporters in the world, and all of yesterdays events highlight this. the charity football tournament and the polish community day included.

however, it was so disappointing to see the anger, resentment, bigotry and hatred that the riots rose up within our own set of supporters. in some ways it was to be expected, while in other ways, it was worrying how this caused such a sinister atmosphere within the ground. and disgusting that innocent polish people in various estates across the country will be victimised as a result of their countrymen’s actions. and sad that were left talking about THIS rather than yet another incredible victory by the Green and White Army.

yesterday was a step back for tolerance and for welcoming the foreigner into our midst.

relevance or presence? – part 1 March 26, 2009

relevance

i’ve been thinking for a while now about how church after church after church searches constantly for relevance in their gatherings, meetings and publications. in fact, hold that thought. perhaps a problem is that many of us aren’t even seeking for relevance but that’s another blog altogether!!

anyway, i’ve been wondering whether in the search for relevance we have abandoned the need to simply be present. is the call of the gospel to be relevant to people or present with people?

it frustrates me how many conversations we can have about cool churches with great visuals, music, lighting or other externals….and yet we completely miss out people! one of the greatest needs of people in our world is ‘belonging’. the sense of belonging to a group of people or to a cause. how are we seeking to meet this need?

more and more in our church gatherings i’m searching for interaction, sharing, belonging. we can’t continue joining with other believers for 90 minutes and not talk to each other! if we continue starting at the back of people’s heads then how is that building community?

perhaps the two should go hand in hand but i would happily ditch the revelance, if it meant we could be more present in each others lives. less of a show and more of a response. less front focus and more each other aware. less listening and more interaction. less passive and more active.

motorways

…about drivers who continually drive on the outside lane of the motorway even when they aren’t overtaking any vehicles.

maybe because i spend some of my days out on the road across northern ireland i get exposed to more of this but it’s starting to do my head in a bit!!  i try to refuse to undertake these vehicles but it’s very difficult when they are sitting at 50mph with no other cars around them!!

i’m posting this because more people need to know that the outside lanes of motorways are NOT fast lanes, but overtaking lanes!! and that’s even if they are driving at the speed limit…

i’m done.

rise-flier

really wanted to let you know about a Youth Event called ‘RISE’ which is happening at my church,  Muckamore Presbyterian on Saturday night 11th April.

RISE is open to all churches and all young people in the local area, and will hopefully provide a good opportunity to bring young people along to a place where we hope they will meet God in a relevant and creative, yet meaningful way.

aimed at teenagers, it promises to be a really exciting night, with both a live DJ and band coming along to provide the music, as well as a mix of crowd challenges, videos and interviews.

our special guest is a beatboxer who will share his skills and his story! there will also be a good selection from our cocktail bar!!

pukka \PUHK-uh\, adjective:
1. Authentic; genuine.
2. Good of its kind; first-class.

this week’s word just sounds so cool. i don’t really care what it means but i challenge anyone to use it in a sentence this weekend and keep a straight face!

it makes me think of other things but i suppose it’s a good meaning. we need more pukka people in the world!!

stpatricksday2

more than being a sinn fein advertising icon, a day off work, an excuse to get hammered, or a bloke who drove away snakes, st. patrick was actually a really inspiring bloke.

maybe today is a good day to go and google some of his writings and prayers. some amazing stuff…

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven:
Light of sun,
Radiance of moon,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of wind,
Depth of sea,
Stability of earth,
Firmness of rock.

I arise today
Through God’s strength to pilot me:
God’s might to uphold me,
God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me,
God’s ear to hear me,
God’s word to speak for me,
God’s hand to guard me,
God’s way to lie before me,
God’s shield to protect me,
God’s host to save me
From snares of demons,
From temptations of vices,
From everyone who shall wish me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone and in multitude.

in a week full of so much turmoil for our country and as northern ireland hits the headlines once again for all the wrong reasons, i felt it was quite significant to be standing in the ulster hall on monday night as it reopened to the sound of 14 quality bands.

ulsterhall

it’s such a special venue and has been missed over the last 2 years as it’s been closed. i’ve had many special nights in it at various concerts, at the monthly mannafest which was significant in my own spiritual journey, and even getting to play on the stage one night at a new years eve party.

not too sure why it’s taken so long to refurbish as it just looked a fresh lick of paint and cleaned toilets, but i was relieved the old look of the venue had remained in tact!

anyway, the gig just made me so proud to be from this wee country as one after the other, amazing, creative and unique bands stepped forward to perform their short set. highlights of the night for me were…

:: duke special’s set (as always!!) and his crowd surf
:: ash performing ‘mrs robinson’
:: the ‘teenage kicks’ finale
:: a great band i’ve never heard before called Cashier No. 9
:: gary lightbody performing unexpectedly
:: bumping into lots of familiar faces and old friends

however, it was foy vance who stole the show a bit with a brand new song which hushed the crowd into silent. a very special moment and can’t wait to hear it again at his gig in May!!

all in all, a great night for music in northern ireland and a reminder of what an amazing and creative wee country i am part of.
