i was chatting with someone last night about how the smell of smoke catches on your clothes and affects you, even when we don’t realise it. he was so right. i remember it well from the teenage years of spending most weekends in smoked fill snooker halls. my clothes were always stinking and headed straight for the washing machine when i got home.
living in the real world with real people means that we are subjected to so many different influences. the things we watch. the words we hear. the culture around us. even though we don’t consciously take stuff in, we are constantly being influenced by those around. it can leave us smelling of smoke this guy told me.
and i was thinking about that this morning and then i thought of jude 23: “snatch others from the fire and save them.”
perhaps were called to be people who smell of smoke…

Hey Rick! You’re thinking on the same wavelength that I am at the minute. I’m reading through Dan Kimball’s “They Like Jesus but not the Church” and it is pushing me down this thought path. It’s better to be trying to be loving and reaching out and smell of smoke, than to sit satisfied that “I” am saved and smell of flowers, so to speak. Challenging stuff that demands not just more thought but action.

Hi Rick,
I’m not sure if you’re still maintaining this blog, but I really like the idea of needing to be someone who smells of smoke.
I suppose the tricky bit is working out just how smokey you’re willing to get…
I love the name of your blog too.
Hooroo,
amber.
